For all Federal and State Incentives, please visit the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency.

Currently, the Federal Government is offering a 30% tax credit on new renewable energy product, which includes Solar Thermal Hot Water Heating Systems, Hot Air Systems, and Solar Attic Fans. The tax credit is good for the fully installed price and has no maximum. Property owners can roll excess credit over into future tax years.  The tax credit is available on new installs completed before 12/31/2016.  For more information, click here.

There are plenty of incentives for installing renewable energy systems. One of the primary reasons you may want to install a solar thermal hot water heating system is the long-term energy savings you’ll receive. Several factors come into play to help determine the overall savings of your solar system. The physical orientation of your panels will contribute to their effectiveness. Your family’s usage of hot water and energy will play a major role in how much you end up saving. Using your system’s hot water in the late morning and early afternoon can help maximize your savings. This is because your solar system is working at peak performance. You can also space out large water consuming tasks, like doing laundry. Try to spread loads out over several days, instead of piling multiple into one.

What is the cost of a solar thermal system?

Your solar thermal system’s cost can range from $8,000 to $12,000 or more. We will determine the cost with a combination of these factors:

  • Amount of people in a home, and how often it requires heat
  • Your solar system’s type, brand, and sizing.
  • The specifications of the roof on which the install takes place (shape and positioning of the roof)
  • Building code requirements
  • Local incentives can often become available, check with your area!
